How banks are ranked

This directory ranks banks by total assets — everything on the balance sheet, from loans to securities — converted to US dollars. It is the most common measure of bank size, but not the only one:

  • Total assets show balance-sheet size. Rankings move when exchange rates change, even if nothing else does.
  • Tier 1 capital shows the core equity cushion that absorbs losses; some rankings use it instead of assets.
  • Market value shows what investors think the bank is worth and changes daily.
  • G-SIB status — the Financial Stability Board publishes a list of global systemically important banks each year; these banks must hold extra capital.

Why bank size matters in international trade

  • Letter of credit confirmation. Exporters often ask a large, well-rated bank to confirm an LC issued by a smaller bank.
  • Correspondent banking. Cross-border payments pass through correspondent accounts; large banks have the widest networks.
  • Acceptability. Many beneficiaries only accept guarantees and standby LCs from banks above a minimum size or rating.

For trade-focused lenders, export credit agencies and fintechs, see the trade finance institutions directory; for LC rules, the UCP 600 workbench.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest bank in the world by assets?

In recent years the largest banks by total assets have been Chinese state-owned banks, led by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). See the table for the current order in this directory.

Why are so many of the largest banks in China?

China's economy relies heavily on bank lending rather than bond markets, and its four biggest state-owned banks have very large domestic deposit and loan books.

What is a G-SIB?

A global systemically important bank: a bank whose failure could disrupt the world financial system. The Financial Stability Board updates the list each year and these banks must hold extra capital.

Does a bigger bank mean a safer bank?

Not necessarily. Credit ratings, capital ratios and liquidity are better guides to safety than size.

Why do the rankings change from year to year?

Balance sheets grow or shrink, banks merge, and exchange-rate moves change the dollar value of assets reported in other currencies.
