Freight Weight & Volume Quick Reference

Air Freight Volumetric (Chargeable) Weight
Volumetric weight (kg) = L × W × H (cm) ÷ 6,000 — the standard IATA divisor. Carriers bill on whichever is greater: actual gross weight or volumetric weight.
Sea Freight LCL — “W/M” (Weight or Measure)
Most ocean LCL tariffs charge on 1 CBM (m³) ≈ 1,000 kg, whichever is greater between actual weight and volume — confirm the exact ratio with your forwarder.
Courier / Express Volumetric
Many express couriers use a lighter divisor of 5,000 instead of 6,000, which makes bulky-but-light parcels relatively more expensive to ship by courier than by sea or air cargo.
Need exact container capacities?
Use the 3D Container Stuffing Calculator or the Container Standards Library for verified dimensions and payload limits by container type.

These are widely-used industry rules of thumb for estimating shipments, not a specific carrier's tariff — always confirm exact chargeable-weight rules with your freight forwarder or carrier before quoting a customer.
