Marine Cargo & Specie21 MajorsICC (A/B/C) All Risks
This directory profiles 40 major marine and trade underwriters — Marine Cargo & Specie insurers, P&I mutual clubs of the International Group, Trade Credit & political risk insurers, and Hull & Machinery/reinsurance carriers — each with underwriting capacity, A.M. Best/S&P financial strength rating, and coverage specialties.
How to Use It:
Use the search box ("Search e.g., Allianz, Gard, P&I, A+, Zurich, Coface...") to find an underwriter by name, financial rating, or coverage type.
Click the sector pills (All Underwriters, Marine Cargo (ICC), P&I Mutual Clubs (IG), Trade Credit & ECAs, Hull & Reinsurance) to filter by the line of business you need.
Use "Sort By" to order the list by Global Rank, Underwriting Capacity (High to Low), Underwriter Name, or Headquarters Country.
Click a card to open its full profile: Max Underwriting Line, S&P Rating, Primary Sector, Underwriting Heritage (founding year), a coverage-scope summary, and a Portfolio Risk Allocation chart.
Use "Visit Official Website" in the profile to reach the underwriter's own site, or "Download Underwriter Dossier" for a print/PDF summary.
Click the quick-stat tiles (Total Underwriters, Marine Cargo & Specie, P&I Mutual Clubs, Trade Credit & Political, Hull & Reinsurance) to jump straight to that sector.
Practical Techniques:
Before binding marine cargo cover, check the underwriter's Max Underwriting Line against your shipment/vessel value — a single carrier's line may need co-insurance or facultative reinsurance for high-value cargo.
Match ICC (A/B/C) clause coverage to your cargo type and voyage risk: ICC(A) for all-risks high-value goods, ICC(C) for bulk/commodity shipments where narrower named-peril cover is acceptable.
For vessel operators, confirm P&I cover is with an International Group club — IG membership gives access to the pooling and reinsurance arrangement most ports and charterers require as proof of liability cover.
When selling on open account to a new buyer or into a higher-risk market, use a Trade Credit & ECA insurer to cover buyer non-payment or political risk before extending credit terms.
Cross-check a carrier's A.M. Best or S&P rating shown in its profile against your contract's minimum-rating clause (many charterparties/sale contracts require "A-" or better) before accepting its cover note.
